smart style series – week two

Well hello there!

Thanks for stopping by again for week 2 of the  Smart Style series!  I am so glad you’re here!

This week, I’m actually going to share TWO different tops that make the complete outfit for two reasons.  They are both UNDER $20 and they are both really great “wear now” (and wear later) outfits, so you should scoop them up now to maximize their wear.  This week’s feature?

The classic oxford shirt!

First, I’ll show you this week’s look, then get into the details and info you need:

(in the bottom photo, I am likely thinking of what the latte crash is going to be like later)

TOP OXFORD (light purple and white) |BOTTOM OXFORD (pink twill) – BOTH UNDER $20

DENIM | SHOES | WATCH

(sizing note – TTS in tops/shoes ((I’m wearing an XS in the top and shoes fit perfectly for me, but if between sizes, go down)) and the denim doesn’t have stretch, so size up in them – I’m wearing a 25 for reference)

I hope you liked Week 1 of the Smart Style Series – but in case you missed it and want to get caught up, you can find it right HERE.  Basically, though, the concept is to dress smarter, not harder.  You know that old adage of, “work smarter, not harder”?  That concept has always been one of my favorites and I think it can be applied to so many things – even getting dressed in the morning.  Who wants to spend a ton of time thinking about what they’re going to wear?  Personally, I get frustrated and start to sweat if I spend more than about 2 minutes figuring out what I’m wearing.  And I think one of the things that helps me is breaking it down to basics.  So for this series, we will be using the same pair of denim, the same pair of shoes, and the same bag.

The goal is to show you that you can style a bunch of cute, different looks using the same staple items – this saves you MONEY and it saves you TIME getting dressed!

But today, I wanted to feature two great tops that are the perfect fabric length and weight to transition into spring.   (And guess what?  They are both UNDER $20! AND come in multiple colors.)  Gone are the days of the ole Oxford shirt feeling stuffy and only for professionals (and also super expensive).  These days, you can dress an Oxford up or down and create an array of different looks with them.

TOP OXFORD (light purple and white) |BOTTOM OXFORD (pink twill) – BOTH UNDER $20

How to wear:

For the work place, you can easily wear these tops with a skirt or trousers, or even just tucked into some cute jeans.  My preference most of the time?  Roll up the sleeves, unbutton the bottom few buttons of the shirt and knot that bad boy in the center.  This makes the shirt more casual, throws a bit of style into it, and creates an entirely different look than if you have it tucked in or out in the workplace.  And the great part?  You can wear these tops now with trousers/jeans/skirts, but also wear in the later spring and early summer with shorts.  So you will get your wear out of these super cute (and comfortable, cuz no one likes wearing stiff shirts) oxford shirts.

For reference, they are TTS (true to size) and I’m wearing an XS.

Style Tip:

If you are nervous about this, size up in the shirt for length and just try it!  I’m tellin’ ya.  It may feel a little uncomfortable or different if you’re not used to knotting your shirts, but it will give you a completely different look – and you may even be able to take shirts from your own closet that you feel hang weird or don’t have good shape to them and make them wearable!

I also had to show this with my new favorite handbag!  I got a lot of comments and questions about this purse – and let me just tell you, it’s as quality as it is cute!  And one of my favorite functions about it is that it can double as a laptop case!  I’ve been lugging around my laptop and files in this purse, with my phone, wallet, lip glosses, etc. and plenty of room to spare.  The camel color that I have keeps selling out, but it does come back in stock often.  And I was really torn between that and the other two colors because they are all super neutral and pretty.  If you’re thinking about buying it, do it!  You will be very happy with your purchase!

So there you have it!  The second edition of Smart Style!  I hope you can see that you can start making a great wardrobe with basic pieces, without breaking the bank.  Because being fashionable can be affordable.

Stay tuned for next week’s Smart Style – we will be getting more and more into spring – and doing it smartly and stylishly!

What other looks would you like to see on here?  What holds up your mornings/style?  I’d love to hear your feedback!
